One of the key men in England's 1966 World Cup triumph, Gordon Banks, has died aged 81.

The final at Wembley was one of 73 times Banks played for his country with the abiding memory for many being his save from Pele against Brazil in 1970.

The legendary striker paid tribute to a man who he became good friends in the years following that save, saying: "Whenever we met, it was always like we had never been apart."

Peter Shilton followed in Banks' footsteps for Leicester City, Stoke City and England and said: "He was one of the greatest of all time, he was a World Cup winner and made that fantastic save from Pele which made him famous worldwide."

England boss Gareth Southgate also paid tribute.

"An all-time great for England, I was privileged enough to be in his company on a number of occasions.

"It was particularly special to be with him at a Football Writers' tribute dinner last year and wish him well on his 80th birthday.

"Gordon spoke to the room about that incredible save from Pele and moments like that from his remarkable World Cup-winning career will continue to linger long in the memory."
