World Champions Await England

England kick off their defence of the SheBelieves Cup against the 2019 World Cup winners USA next weekend, a rematch of the semi-final in France and the biggest test in women’s international football, especially with the US team being on home soil.

And whereas the Lionesses are getting together for a first competitive fixture since last summer, having struggled for form and fluency in their autumn friendlies, the hosts have recently shown their quality by easing through the Concacaf Olympic Qualifying tournament, scoring 25 goals and conceding none in their five matches.

The vast majority of the players who earned global fame in France, such as Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, Julie Ertz and Crystal Dunn, have been named in their squad for the SheBelieves Cup but there has been change off the pitch with coach Jill Ellis moving on to be replaced by Vlatko Andonovski.

Phil Neville, in contrast, has experimented a little in his selections for the trip as he builds towards Euro 2020 on home soil next summer.
